What is an Abdominoplasty?

Many patients live an active and healthy lifestyle, yet still find themselves with sagging skin or a pocket of excess fat along the abdomen. Weight fluctuation, pregnancy, and age may all contribute to stretched abdominal muscles. Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgery to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and to repair the muscles of the abdominal wall. Generally Dr. Kim performs a lipo-abdominoplasty, which includes liposuction of the upper abdomen and flanks to help flatten the abdomen and narrow the waist, providing the patient with a tighter, toned stomach.

How is Dr. Kim's Lipo-Abdominoplasty Different?

Many plastic surgeons perform a more traditional tummy tuck with liposuction along the flanks or waistline. Dr. Kim performs a lipo-abdominoplasty which incorporates liposuction of the upper and central abdomen, as well as the flanks. This additional liposuction makes the abdominal flap thinner and tighter for more desirable results. Liposuction of the central abdomen during a tummy tuck requires a different specialized technique to preserve bloodflow to the abdominal flap. Many plastic surgeons do not use this technique. However, Dr. Kim has performed hundreds of lipo-abdominoplasties with this improved technique.

Candidates

A good candidate for a tummy tuck may have stomach muscles which have become stretched or separated, a condition known as diastasis rectus which can commonly result from pregnancy. Patients with loose skin or pockets of fat due to weight fluctuations, age or other surgeries may also be good candidates for an abdominoplasty. Patients should be at or close to their ideal weight, but still have extra fat and loose skin of the abdomen.

Procedure

Surgery is usually performed in an outpatient surgical setting while the patient is under general anesthesia. Surgery can take between two to four hours depending on the patient’s individual needs. A diluted local anesthetic, known as tumescent fluid, is infused into the fatty tissues to numb the area and reduce bleeding. A thin cannula is then used to suction out the fat.

Once the liposuction procedure is complete, a horizontal incision is made along the lower abdomen. This incision is made in a similar position to where a C-section scar might be, but it extends from hip to hip. Once the abdominal skin is lifted, the loose or separated rectus muscles are sewn together and repaired. Then a second incision around the belly button is made, the loose skin is pulled down tightly like a window shade, and the excess is trimmed away. A new opening is made in the skin for the belly button. Drains or thin flexible tubes are temporarily placed to relieve any bleeding or swelling fluid. The skin is then sutured together with layers of dissolving sutures. Dressings and an abdominal compression binder/garment are placed to aid in the recovery process.

Recovery

Tummy tuck surgery is normally done as an outpatient procedure, so patients are able to walk slowly on their own after surgery and can return home on the same day. Patients will walk and sit bent or flexed at the waist for 1 week. Patients may require pain medication for the first few days. Drains are removed in the office seven to ten days after surgery. Driving and low-intensity work can be resumed at two weeks. Patients with more physically demanding jobs may require a longer recovery period before returning to work. Light exercise can be resumed at three weeks and patients can return to unlimited exercise at six weeks. Patients should wear compression garments for six weeks following surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to create a flatter, firmer abdomen. It is designed to remove excess skin and fat that may result from significant weight loss or pregnancy. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision across the lower abdomen, through which they remove excess tissue and tighten the underlying abdominal muscles. This muscle repair helps to create a more toned and defined waistline. A second incision may be made to reposition the navel for a natural-looking result. It is not a weight loss solution but rather a body contouring procedure for individuals at a stable, healthy weight.

Preparing for a tummy tuck requires careful planning to ensure a safe procedure and smooth recovery. It is crucial to be in good overall health and at a stable weight, as this is a body contouring surgery, not a weight loss method. You will need to stop smoking at least several weeks before surgery, as it can significantly impair healing. Your surgeon will also instruct you to avoid certain medications and supplements, like aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs, which can increase bleeding. Additionally, it is essential to prepare your home for recovery, arrange for a caregiver to assist you in the initial days, and fill all post-operative prescriptions in advance.

Recovery from a tummy tuck is a gradual process that requires patience. In the first few days, you can expect significant swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which is managed with prescribed pain medication. It’s crucial to rest and walk gently around the house to prevent blood clots. You will likely wear a compression garment for several weeks to reduce swelling and support your new contours. Most patients can return to light activities and work after one to two weeks, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting must be avoided for at least six weeks. The final results may not be fully visible for several months as the swelling continues to resolve.

You must approach exercise very cautiously after a tummy tuck. The first few weeks are crucial for healing, and you should focus on rest and light walking to promote circulation and prevent blood clots. Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and any exercises that strain the abdominal muscles are strictly off-limits for at least six weeks. Around four to six weeks post-surgery, with your surgeon’s clearance, you can gradually introduce low-impact cardio like walking on an incline or using a stationary bike. Core-strengthening exercises, such as planks or crunches, should be avoided for a minimum of 12 weeks. Always listen to your body and consult with your surgeon before resuming any workout routine to ensure a safe and successful recovery.

Determining the best abdominoplasty technique for you is a decision made in close consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. The ideal method depends on your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. Common techniques include a mini tummy tuck, which is suitable for individuals with a small amount of excess skin and fat below the belly button. A full tummy tuck addresses the entire abdomen, including tightening muscles and removing excess skin both above and below the navel. For those who have experienced massive weight loss, an extended tummy tuck may be necessary to remove excess skin from the abdomen, flanks, and lower back. Your surgeon will evaluate your skin laxity, muscle condition, and overall body type to recommend the safest and most effective approach.

Determining if you’re a good candidate for plastic surgery involves several factors, not just your aesthetic goals. Key considerations include being in good physical health, with no underlying conditions that could increase surgical risks. You should also be in a stable emotional state and have realistic expectations about the outcome. Plastic surgery can enhance your appearance and confidence, but it won’t solve life’s problems or make you look exactly like someone else. Lastly, you must be a non-smoker and have a clear understanding of the procedure, including its costs, risks, and recovery time. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to get a personalized evaluation.

During a plastic surgery consultation, you can expect a comprehensive discussion about your goals and health. The surgeon will review your medical history, including any medications, allergies, and past surgeries, to determine if you are a good candidate. Be prepared to discuss your aesthetic goals in detail, and the surgeon may perform a physical examination of the area you wish to change. They will then explain the procedure, discuss potential risks and complications, and outline the expected recovery process. This is your opportunity to ask questions, view before-and-after photos, and get a detailed breakdown of the costs. The goal is to ensure you are well-informed and have realistic expectations.

Recovery from plastic surgery varies significantly based on the procedure and individual factors. Generally, the initial, most uncomfortable recovery period lasts a few days to a week. For many common procedures like breast augmentation or liposuction, patients can often return to a desk job within one to two weeks, but more strenuous activities and exercise are typically restricted for at least six weeks. Swelling and bruising may take several months to fully subside, and the final results may not be visible for up to a year. It is crucial to follow all post-operative instructions from your surgeon to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results.

Plastic surgery, when performed by a board-certified surgeon in an accredited facility, is generally considered safe. However, like any surgical procedure, it carries inherent risks. Common complications can include bleeding, infection, scarring, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Serious, though rare, risks include blood clots and pulmonary embolism. To minimize these risks, it is crucial to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon and to be an honest, healthy candidate. Following all pre- and post-operative instructions, such as quitting smoking and limiting activity during recovery, significantly reduces the chance of complications and helps ensure a successful outcome.

Yes, some form of scarring is an inevitable part of the healing process after any surgical procedure. However, plastic surgeons are trained in techniques to minimize their visibility. They strategically place incisions in natural skin folds, creases, or areas that are easily concealed, such as the hairline, behind the ears, or along the bikini line. The final appearance of a scar depends on several factors, including your genetics, skin type, age, and how well you follow post-operative care instructions. With proper care, such as keeping the area clean, avoiding sun exposure, and using recommended products like silicone gel sheets, scars can significantly fade and become much less noticeable over time.

The longevity of plastic surgery results varies significantly depending on the procedure and individual factors. While some results are considered permanent, the natural aging process, gravity, and lifestyle choices will continue to affect your appearance over time. For example, procedures like rhinoplasty or breast reduction permanently alter the body’s structure. However, a facelift may last 10-15 years, and breast implants may need to be replaced after 10-20 years. Maintaining a stable weight, avoiding sun exposure, and following a healthy lifestyle are crucial for preserving your results and extending their duration.

While CS Kim Plastic Surgery may not offer in-house financing directly, they work with third-party medical financing companies. Since most cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance, these services are a common way to manage costs. Options typically include medical credit cards like CareCredit or Alphaeon Credit, which can offer promotional no-interest periods. Some patients also use personal loans or credit cards with a 0% introductory APR. These options allow you to break down the total cost into manageable monthly payments. During your consultation, you can discuss these financing avenues and find a plan that works best for your budget.

Whether or not a plastic surgery consultation is complimentary varies significantly by practice. While some surgeons offer free consultations as a way to attract new patients and allow them to explore options without a financial commitment, others charge a fee. This fee, which can range from a nominal amount to several hundred dollars, is often intended to compensate the surgeon for their time and expertise during a detailed evaluation. In many cases, this consultation fee is applied toward the final cost of your surgery if you choose to book the procedure with that practice. It is always best to inquire about the specific consultation fee policy when scheduling your appointment.
