What is a Mini Abdominoplasty?

A mini abdominoplasty is a smaller, less intrusive version of a traditional tummy tuck. Patients may prefer a mini abdominoplasty for the shorter, lower abdominal scar and no additional scar around the belly button. For the right candidate, a mini abdominoplasty can still be sufficient to address the excess skin and fat of the abdomen and to repair the muscles of the lower abdomen.

Candidates

The best candidates for a mini abdominoplasty may have loose skin of the lower abdomen and stretched muscles below the belly button. Patients with fatty pockets along the upper abdomen, flanks, and waist can be effectively treated with a mini tummy tuck. Ideal candidates should be close to their ideal body weight, but still have excess skin and fat of the abdomen that they wish to address.

Procedure

Mini abdominoplasty is usually performed in an outpatient surgical setting while the patient is under general anesthesia. The surgery generally takes between two to three hours First a dilute local anesthetic, known as tumescent fluid, is infused into the fatty tissue to numb the area and reduce bleeding. A thin cannula is then used to suction out the fat. Often a mini tummy tuck involves more extensive liposuction to compensate for the removal of a smaller amount of skin.

Once the liposuction procedure is complete, a horizontal incision is made along the lower abdomen. This incision is made in a similar position to where a C-section scar might be, but may extend slightly further depending on the amount of skin removed. Next, the abdominal skin is lifted to the level of the belly button and the loose or separated muscles of the lower abdomen are sutured together and repaired. The loose skin of the lower abdomen is then pulled down tightly like a window shade, and any excess is trimmed away.  Drains or thin flexible tubes are temporarily placed to relieve any bleeding or swelling. The skin is then stitched together with layers of dissolving sutures, and dressings and an abdominal compression binder are placed to aid in the recovery process.

Recovery

A mini abdominoplasty is normally performed as an outpatient procedure, so after surgery patients are able to walk slowly without assistance and can return home on the same day. Patients should walk and sit flexed at the waist for one week following surgery. Patients may require pain medication for the first few days of recovery. Drains are removed in the office seven to ten days after surgery. Patients can resume driving and low-intensity work after two weeks. Patients with more physically-demanding jobs may require a longer recovery period before returning to work. They can resume light exercise at three weeks and can return to unlimited exercise at six weeks. Patients should continue to wear compression garments for six weeks following surgery.
