Laser Liposuction
Many people spend hours at the gym every week attempting to sculpt their bodies, only to find that body shape is not entirely determined by miles spent on the treadmill. Factors such as genetics, hormones, stage of life and previous pregnancies may all play a significant role in body shape and proportion. Anyone who has tried to reduce fat in specific areas of the body knows that spot reduction of fat is not possible. Laser liposuction is an innovative technique that blends laser technology with permanent and targeted fat removal.
Candidates
Laser liposuction may be a good option for patients who have areas of stubborn fat that have not responded to diet and exercise, or that are out of proportion to the rest of their body. Laser liposuction is more effective for patients with thinner skin or mild skin laxity. Good candidates for liposuction should have realistic expectations and understand that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, nor will it get rid of cellulite.
Procedure
Laser Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anaesthetic with oral sedation, IV sedation, or with general anesthesia. Small incisions, about ¼ inch long, are made near the target areas. Then a dilute solution of local anesthesia is infused into the fatty tissues to numb the area and reduce bleeding. At this stage, Dr. Kim will deliver precise amounts of laser energy to the deeper skin and fatty tissue. This laser energy breaks up fat cells, essentially liquifying them. It also heats up the deeper skin and collagen to promote mild skin tightening over time. A thin hollow tube or cannula is then used to separate and suction out undesired fat. The small incisions are closed with a suture and the treated areas are then covered with absorbent pads and a compression garment.
Recovery
Patients commonly report some blood-tinged fluid draining from the surgical incisions for a few days following surgery, so patients should sleep on towels or absorbent pads. Often patients report mild pain, which may require medication for two or three days. Patients should sponge bathe until they are given doctor’s approval to shower. Patients can resume driving once they are off pain medication, typically around two or three days after surgery. Depending on swelling, patients can often return to light work after two to three days and exercise after a week. The surgical areas may be swollen and bruised for several weeks following the procedure.
