How does Breast Augmentation Surgery work?
Cosmetic plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, are cosmetic procedures. Increased fullness and a balanced shape and size of the breasts are the objectives of the procedure. Breast augmentation surgery can also include lifting the breasts in addition to implant placement. Patients are usually given general anesthesia or intravenous sedation during the outpatient procedure at a cosmetic surgery center. The surgery takes an average of one to two hours to complete; however, it may take longer depending on the type of surgery.

Choosing a qualified, experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon is the first step in preparing for breast implants. It is important to discuss your medical history, the reasons why you want breast implants, and your goals during your consultation. As part of the physical examination, the doctor will assess the size and shape of your breasts, as well as the elasticity of your skin.
In addition to saline or silicone implants, the plastic surgeon will explain what shapes and textures are available. During the consultation, the surgeon will also discuss different breast implant placement techniques. Based on the shape and size of your natural breasts and your unique goals, your physician will recommend the best options for you.
An Overview of Breast Augmentation Surgery
A general anesthetic or intravenous sedation will be administered for the procedure. A single incision will be made in your breasts to place the implants. There are several locations where the incision can be made:
A pocket will be created behind or on top of the pectoral muscle, the top muscle of the chest wall, after the incision is made. Your nipple will be centered behind the implant, which is placed inside the pocket.
The sterile salt water (saline) in saline implants is injected after they are inserted, filling them with sterile salt water (saline). Before silicone implants are placed, they are already filled with silicone gel.
Using sutures, the cosmetic surgeon will close the incision after the breast implants are in place and positioned properly.
Self-care instructions will be provided after surgery. Following these instructions will help you heal faster. If you experience discomfort or pain, you will most likely be given medication to relieve it. A cold pack can be used to reduce pain and swelling in the breasts. Your doctor may recommend wearing a sports bra or compression bandage during the healing process.
Within two weeks after the surgery, you should refrain from strenuous exercise and heavy lifting. Additionally, sleeping and lying upright might be helpful; avoid lying on your stomach completely.
If your job involves heavy lifting or jarring movements, you may have to take longer off or request lighter duties after surgery. You may be able to return to work a week or less after surgery, depending on your job description. It takes approximately six weeks for most patients to fully recover and be able to resume their normal routine.
