What is Laser Liposuction?
You’ve probably heard of traditional liposuction, a procedure that aims to remove fatty deposits from various parts of the body; the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and arms – there’s even facial liposuction and lip liposuction.
While traditional liposuction surgery is effective, it is an invasive procedure that often requires several weeks of downtime to recover. If you’re plagued by stubborn fat deposits that just won’t budge and you’re thinking about liposuction but you don’t want to undergo a serious procedure, there is another option you might want to consider: laser liposuction.
Laser liposuction – also known as laser lipolysis – is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves using lasers to melt fat under the skin. Like traditional liposuction, laser lipo can be used to treat fat deposits from various parts of the body, including the:
- Upper thighs
Because of the suction method that is used to extract the fatty deposits, laser liposuction is considered a permanent fat reduction treatment; however, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important following the procedure to ensure the results are long-lasting. Remember: while old fatty deposits may be removed, new ones can develop, so be sure to adhere to a well-balanced diet and engage in regular exercise following this procedure.
What does Laser Liposuction Entail?
At Dr. CS Kim Plastic Surgery, laser lipo is performed as an outpatient procedure at our state-of-the-art, Joint Commission Accredited Fairfield County medical facility. Prior to the procedure, a local anesthetic with oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia (you and Dr. Kim will determine which option is the right choice for you) will be administered.
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Kim will place small incisions (approximately ¼ inch long) within close proximity to the area you want to target. Next, a diluted local anesthesia solution will be infused into the fatty tissues, which helps to numb the area and minimize any bleeding. Dr. Kim will then deliver powerful laser energy into the pockets of fatty tissue and the deeper skin. The energy the laser produces breaks up the fat cells and essentially turns them into a liquid, while also heating up the deeper skin and collagen to encourage mild tightening of the skin.
Lastly, a cannula, a thin hollow tube, will be placed through the incision and used to divide and remove unwanted fatty deposits. A suture will be used to close the incision. Absorbent pads and a compression garment will be applied to the site to prevent bleeding and swelling and to facilitate faster healing.
What is Recovery Like?
Generally speaking, recovery from laser liposuction is much faster and less painful than recovery from traditional liposuction surgery. While some patients do report some degree of discomfort, usually, it is mild. Dr. Kim can prescribe medications that can help to ease any pain that you might experience. Additionally, applying ice packs to the site can also help to minimize discomfort, as well as swelling.
Do note that it is not unusual to see some amount of fluid draining from the incisions for at least a few days after the procedure. We recommend lying and/or sitting on absorbent pads or towels until the drainage stops. It is also not uncommon to see some swelling and bruising around the area that was treated. You should not fully submerge the treated site in water until Dr. Kim lets you know it is okay to do so. Until then, avoid showering or bathing, and instead, use sponge baths to freshen up.
Depending on the level of swelling and pain you are experiencing, you may be able to return to work and other physical activities just a few days after surgery; however, you will have to gently ease back into things. Abstain from strenuous physical activity until Dr. Kim gives you the go-ahead.
The amount of time it will take to fully recover from laser liposuction varies. The area that was treated, the amount of fat that was removed, and your threshold for pain are all factors that will determine what your recovery will be like.
The Benefits of Laser Liposuction
The unique treatment that laser liposuction entails offers numerous benefits, the most notable of which include:
- Permanent fat loss. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the results will last forever.
- Instant results that continue to improve as time goes on. Because the procedure breaks down and removes fatty tissue, you can see immediate results.
- Because this procedure is minimally invasive, it’s less painful than traditional liposuction.
- Faster recovery time than traditional liposuction, again, thanks to the minimal invasiveness of the procedure.
- Enhanced results. With traditional liposuction, patients often experience sagging skin at the site where the fatty tissue was removed. Because laser lipo heats up the deeper skin and activates the collagen, it mildly tightens the skin, so the treatment site will appear more toned.
