What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

A breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure. The objective of the procedure is to increase the fullness of the breasts and balance their shape and size. In addition to placing implants, the breasts can also be lifted during breast augmentation surgery. The procedure is usually performed at an outpatient cosmetic surgery center while the patient is under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The time it takes to complete the surgery varies; however, on average, it takes about one to two hours to complete.

Reasons Women Choose to Have Breast Augmentation Surgery

The reasons why women decide to get breast implants vary and are personal; however, some of the most common reasons include:

  • To increase their physical appearance
  • To balance uneven or asymmetrical breasts
  • To restore the shape and size of the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding or after extreme weight loss
  • To reconstruct their breasts after a mastectomy
  • To increase their self-confidence

How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation

To prepare for breast implants, you’ll first need to consult with a reputable, experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. During your consultation, you and the physician will go review your medical history, the reasons why you want to have breast implants, and your goals for the procedure. The doctor will also perform a physical evaluation to assess the size and shape of your breasts, as well as the elasticity of your skin.

The plastic surgeon will explain the different types of implants that can be used, such as saline or silicone, rounded or teardrop-shaped, and smooth or textured. He or she will also discuss the different techniques that can be used to place breast implants. The physician will recommend the best options for you based on the shape and size of your natural breasts and your unique goals.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery

The procedure will be performed while you are under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The implants will be placed through a single incision in your breasts. The incision can be made in one of the following locations:

  • In the crease underneath your breasts (known as an inframammary incision)
  • Around the nipple (referred to as a periareolar incision)

Once the incision is made, the surgeon will create a pocket either behind or on top of the pectoral muscle, the top muscle of the chest wall. The implant will be placed inside the pocket and will be centered behind your nipple.

If you are having saline implants, the will be empty when inserted and filled with sterile salt water (saline) after they have been put in place. Silicone implants are already filled with silicone gel before they are placed.

Once the breast implants are in place and positioned properly, the cosmetic surgeon will use sutures to close the incision.

What to Expect After the Procedure

After surgery, you will be provided with a full list of self-care instructions. In order to facilitate faster healing, be sure to follow these instructions. You will likely be given medications to ease any pain and discomfort that you may experience. Applying ice packs to the breasts can help to alleviate any swelling and reduce pain. During the healing process, you might be advised to wear a compression bandage around your chest or a sports bra for added support.

You should avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least two weeks after the surgery. It might also be helpful to sleep and lie in an upright position instead of on your back or side; completely avoid lying on your stomach.

Depending on the nature of your job, you may be able to return to work a week or so after surgery; however, if your job entails heavy lifting and/or jarring movements, you may need to take off longer or request lighter duties. After six weeks, most patients are completely recovered and can return to their normal lifestyle.

The Outcome

Breast augmentation can effectively increase the size and shape of your breasts. The procedure can also reposition the breasts if a breast lift is performed at the same time the implants are being placed. After the procedure, you can expect fuller, more even, and shapelier breasts, and a curvier, more feminine silhouette. Your enhanced appearance will certainly improve your self-confidence, too.
