Preparing for Your Consultation at a Cosmetic Surgery Clinic

You’ve done extensive research and have found a few cosmetic surgeons that you feel will best meet your needs; board-certified physicians who specialize in the procedure you are interested in, and who performs surgeries at accredited facilities. Now it’s time for you to meet with the prospective doctors face-to-face.

Consultations are a big step in the plastic surgery process. It means that you’re really serious about moving forward with the procedure. These face-to-face meetings are also really important because they can help you determine if plastic surgery is the right option for you, and if so, which surgeon you should choose to perform your procedure.

But what should you expect during your consultation? If you’ve never met with a plastic surgeon before, you may be feeling a little nervous about your meeting. To help ease your nerves and prepare you for the experience, here’s a basic overview of what you can expect during a consultation at a cosmetic surgery clinic.

Check-in

Upon arriving at the facility, the first thing you’ll need to do is check-in at the front desk. You’ll be asked to provide your name and any paperwork that you may have been asked to fill out ahead of time. You might also be asked to fill out some additional forms. If any of the clinics that you are visiting use electronic medical records, you might be given the opportunity to complete any necessary forms ahead of time through a patient portal.

Once you’re signed in and have completed the required paperwork, you can take a seat in the waiting room. While you’re waiting to be called, inspect the waiting room. Is it clean and comfortable? The patient waiting area of a credible facility will be neat, tidy, furnished with comfortable chairs, well-lit, and will offer reading materials, televisions, or some other form of entertainment that you can enjoy while you’re waiting to be called.

Medical Assistant or Nurse Meet and Greet

When your name is called, the first person you will meet will likely be a medical assistant or a nurse. He or she will review your medical history with you and will help you get settled in. Make sure that you answer all questions honestly; the information that you provide about your medical history is critical and needs to be completely accurate in order to ensure your safety. Make sure you tell the medical assistant or nurse about any conditions that you have been diagnosed with and any medications and supplements – both prescription and over-the-counter – that you take. If you use alcohol or recreational drugs, be sure to share that information as well. Don’t worry; you won’t be scrutinized if you do.

You’ll also be asked about your lifestyle; eating habits, exercise routines, activities that you participate in, and what you do for a living. Meet with the Surgeon

After meeting with a medical assistant or nurse, you will meet with the cosmetic surgeon. If your consultation is at a multi-surgeon practice, be sure that the physician you are meeting with is the one who will be performing your surgery.

During your meeting with the doctor, you will be asked several questions. While the questions you are asked will depend on the procedure you are planning on having done – and the surgeon you are meeting with – the following are examples of what you can expect to be asked:

  • How would you like to feel about your body after surgery?
  • What do you want to look like after the procedure?

  • Where did you get your degree?
  • How will the procedure be performed?

Make sure to write down the answers. You can refer to and compare the answers after you have met with each doctor.

Examination

The surgeon will perform an examination of the area that you would like to transform. If it is an area underneath your clothing – your breasts, tummy, or buttocks, for example – you will be asked to change into a robe. A nurse or assistant will remain in the room during the exam.

The doctor will perform a full examination of the area that you want to have treated. Depending on the procedure you are planning on, measurements may be taken.

Post-Exam Discussion

After the examination, you will be asked to get dressed and will meet with the doctor to have a post-exam discussion. The doctor will share details with you about the procedure, based on the information that was gathered during your previous discussion and examination. You may be shown a “rough draft” of what you can expect to look like after the procedure, too.
