How does Breast Augmentation Surgery work?

Patients are usually given general anesthesia or intravenous sedation during the outpatient procedure at a cosmetic surgery center. The surgery takes an average of one to two hours to complete; however, it may take longer depending on the type of surgery.

A general anesthetic or intravenous sedation will be administered for the procedure. A single incision will be made in your breasts to place the implants. There are several locations where the incision can be made:

  • An incision around the nipple (periareolar incision)

A pocket will be created behind or on top of the pectoral muscle, the top muscle of the chest wall, after the incision is made. Your nipple will be centered behind the implant, which is placed inside the pocket.

The sterile salt water (saline) in saline implants is injected after they are inserted, filling them with sterile salt water (saline). Before silicone implants are placed, they are already filled with silicone gel.

Using sutures, the cosmetic surgeon will close the incision after the breast implants are in place and positioned properly.
